Cream

Summer is the best season to enjoy a cool breeze, beverage, or dessert. Ice cream is a popular treat in the hotter months of the year and while there are many places to buy ice cream, making it at home can be so much fun! There are many different ways to mix the ingredients; cooking it on the stovetop, shaking it in a bag, and using an ice cream machine are just some of the options. Below are a couple of recipes to try:

No-Churn Homemade Ice Cream

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 (14 ounces) can of sweetened condensed milk
  • additional toppings that you desire

Beat the heavy cream until stiff peaks form (be careful not to overbeat or it will turn to butter)

Add the sweetened condensed milk and stir until combined.

Stir in any additional toppings.

Transfer to a freezer safe container and freeze for 6 or more hours.

Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag

In the quart sized bag add the following:

  • 1 cup half and half
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • splash of vanilla
  • additional toppings

Seal the bag and place it inside of the gallon bag.

Put about 4 tablespoons of ice cream salt and 4 cups (or as much as will fit) inside the gallon bag around the quart sized bag.

Wrap the gallon bag in a kitchen towel and shake for 5 minutes (this is where the kids are really helpful).

Eat right away or place in the freezer to freeze more solid.

The ability to create your own dessert is not only fun, but it allows you to choose your exact ingredients in case of any allergies or diet. In the case that someone is lactose intolerant; there are recipes that make ice cream just as delicious with an alternative to dairy. Egg is a common ingredient in this dessert as well, so that ingredient can be substituted by coconut milk or a cornstarch base. Sugar is a huge factor in dieting, so try sweetening this dessert with agave or honey instead! Healthy eating is still an option when indulging in this dessert, as ice cream consists of calcium, protein, and Vitamins A, B2 and B12!

You can also make homemade ice cream cones out of a variety of foods such as cookies, brownies, the traditional waffle cone, and more!

Fun fact: As cold as Alaska is, the native residents of this state LOVE ice cream and have a very different way to make the dessert. The Yup’ik word for Alaskan ice cream is Akutaq and the ingredients include reindeer fat or tallow, seal oil, freshly fallen snow or water, fresh berries, and sometimes ground fish!
