10 Essential Health Benefits
March 31, 2016, 3:54 pm
You may have heard that all Affordable Care Act health insurance plans are required to cover the 10 essential health benefits. In general, these health benefits are the types of care you need to prevent and treat sickness and do not include elective and “non-essential treatments”. So, what are they?
- Outpatient care
- Emergency room visits
- Inpatient care
- Maternity coverage
- Mental health and substance use disorder services
- Prescription drugs
- Services, including therapy, and devices to help you recover if you are injured, or have a disability or chronic condition.
- Lab tests
- Preventive services
- Pediatric dental care and vision care
These benefits may vary from state to state, but are required on most small employer group and new individual health insurance plans. They are not required on large employer group plans, but some may include them.
No matter what kind of health insurance coverage you have, it is important to review your plan details to know what is covered. If you are ever in doubt, call our member services department at 417-269-2900.
