Tips and Tricks
to Avoid the Flu

Flu season is just around the corner, and getting sick is never fun. Make sure you prepare yourself to avoid unwanted germs that may come your way.

Here are reminders for the most common preventions measures we should all take:

  • Stay Hydrated: The flu can make throat and nasal passage dry and irritated. People can also lose lots of fluid when sick and are prone to dehydration. It is important to replenish all fluids during this time, especially when working out. Plus, drinking more fluids will help keep nasal passages moist and reduce irritation, and help your body from feeling sluggish.
  • Wash Your Hands: To get sick, first a virus or bacteria needs to get into your system, and there is no easier way for them to do so than through your eyes, nose, or mouth. Every time you touch your face with dirty hands, you are increasing your chances of getting sick. Because viruses and bacteria are not visible to the human eye, your best preemptive measure is to wash your hands often and try to minimize the number of times you touch your face. Have a hand-sanitizing gel handy for when washing your hands is not an option.
  • Cover Your Nose and Mouth: Another way for you to easily get infected is from other people around you. Be vigilant of those who are sneezing and sniffling in your vicinity and try to keep your distance. It’s common courtesy to cover your nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing anyway, so avoid this no-no.
  • Get Enough Rest: Getting a good night sleep is imperative during flu season. This is the time that your body can really work to fight off those infections. Without proper sleep, your body is less likely to be able to fight off germs. It is recommended for adults to get 6-8 hours of sleep every night.
  • Exercise: Research shows that light to moderate exercise on a regular basis can reduce your risk of getting a cold by a third. Those who participate in moderate physical activity during that time reduced their cold risk significantly. So, to avoid cold and flu, get moving! Go on a walk or take a trip to the gym to help boost your immune system.
  • Reduce Your Stress Levels: We can all benefit from reducing stress in general, but especially during flu season. Stress lowers your body’s immune system response, making it easier for germs to attack. Take a deep breath and set aside some time each day to unwind and relax.
